Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls;
Where words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action –
– Rabindranath Tagore
My teaching philosophy revolves around letting positive ideas prosper unhindered.
All students have the potential to be successful. All they need is to be guided in the right direction.
Students are all unique individuals, each of them with differing needs and backgrounds. I am dedicated to understanding and being sensitive to their needs and put in my best effort to bring out their best performance, even if this requires meeting with them beyond class hours to reach this goal.
Teaching is a mutual learning process.
Teachers go to great lengths to prepare for classes which and be well versed with the topics. While teaching, the students often ask questions and make comments, which makes teachers look at the topic of discussion from different perspectives and promote new lines of thought. Teachers are also gain knowledge by communicating and collaborating with colleagues both within the same discipline as well as outside the discipline. Hence, teaching benefits not only the students, but also the teachers. Learning is a continuous process for both students and teachers.
Active interaction and participation in the learning task incite greater interest in the learnt material.
Students do not benefit as much from a passive lecture as they do from a class where they are encouraged to participate in the learning process. Active group discussion and question and answer sessions help a free exchange of ideas and has been found to be very efficient during the learning process. I encourage students to be comfortable and ask questions without hesitations and bring forward any idea relevant to the topic of study. I prefer to use class room demonstrations of experiments, audio-visual presentations and critical analyses as means to obtaining a thorough understanding of the subject matter.
Goal management is the key to successful class performance.
The key to successful performance is goal management. I try to help students set weekly goals and help monitor their progress towards these goals. This helps them meet deadlines and other course requirements without cramming in the eleventh hour.
Learning should not remain confined to the classrooms.
The learning process is not to remain constricted within the classroom but supplemented by real life experiences or information acquired beyond the classroom. Life is enriched when knowledge acquired in classes can be applied to life and vice versa.
Learning should not end when the class ends.
The learning process should be continuous. The teaching process is most effective when the students retain their curiosity to learn about the subject even after the class has concluded. My efforts as a teacher are directed towards this greater goal of inculcating love and persistent curiosity towards learning.
